What Is Discord Red Dot?

Discord is a platform that allows millions of users to communicate with friends via video calls, voice, text messaging, files, and media. When using Discord, you may notice a red dot. So, what does the red dot on Discord mean? That depends on where you see the red dot.

If you see a Discord red dot on the icon, it is the Status badge. When logging in to Discord, you always see a dot in the bottom left-hand corner. Users in any server you belong to can see this. The red dot on Discord with a black line means the status is set to “Do not disturb”.

You may see Discord’s red circle white dot on the Windows taskbar. It means you have unread messages. Simply put, you are currently not on the app window; after a few minutes, you see the dot. This alerts you that someone messages you while you are out of the application.

How to Disable the Red Dot on Discord Icon?

After receiving numerous reports from multiple users, we decided to investigate the Red dot and its functionality. Fortunately, we discovered a convenient method in the discord settings which makes it go away permanently. To disable the Red Dot:

  1. Launch the Discord application and sign in to your account.
  2. Click on the “Settings” cog next to your username in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

  3. Click on the “Notifications” option in the left pane.

  4. Click on the toggle in front of the “Enable Unread Message Badge” to turn it off.

  5. Click on the “X” on the top right of the screen to close Discord.

  6. Launch Discord again and check to see if the issue persists.

Note: The Red Dot will now be permanently disabled but this method will also prevent you from being aware of unread messages, enable the “Unread Message Badge” if you want to have the red dot functionality.

How do I get rid of the red dot on the Discord Icon?

1. Toggle the Unread Message Badge Setting Off

  1. Hit the Windows key, type Discord, then open the first result.
  2. Click on the User Settings button, at the left bottom of the Discord window.
  3. Next, click Notifications on the left side of Discord.
  4. Then turn off the Enable Unread Message Badge option.
  5. Thereafter, restart the app.

This is a quick and easy solution if Discord red dot won’t go away, so be sure to try it.

2. Disable the Red Dot on Discord Icon – Mute channels

  1. Hit the Windows key, type Discord, then click on the first option.
  2. Click your server button on the left side of Discord.
  3. Select Notifications Settings (marked as a bell), from the top of your Discord window.
  4. Hover the mouse on the Mute Channel option.
  5. Then select the Until I turn it back on option.

Muting a channel will disable unread message notifications for that channel. You’ll still receive red dot unread message notifications for channels that aren’t muted.

3. Select the Mark as Read Option

  1. Use the following keyboard shortcut, then type Discord, and open it: Windows + S.
  2. Open Discord, then right-click on the desired server.
  3. Choose to Mark as Read.

You can mark messages as read for all channels within a server to eliminate red dot unread message notifications. We recommend doing that for all your Discord servers.

After this, the red dot on the Discord icon will go away. Keep in mind that this is just temporary, and the red dot will appear after you get new messages.

4. Change your Status to Remove Red Dot with Line

  1. Hit the Windows key, type Discord, then open the first result.
  2. Click on your Avatar User button.
  3. In the opened menu, select the Online option to replace a red dot with a line in Discord.

So, it’s pretty straightforward to get rid of the red dots in Discord.

You can remove unread message red dot notifications with three alternative methods, but there’s only one way to get rid of an online status red dot.
